SITE DISTURBANCES ASSOCIATED WITH ALTERNATIVE PRESCRIPTIONS IN AN UPLAND HARDWOOD FOREST OF NORTHERN ALABAMA bY

چکیده
A study was installed in an upland hardwood forest to evaluate the site impacts associated with three alternative prescriptions clearcut, deferment cut, and strip cut. Two methods of site impact assessment were employed: 1) assignment of disturbance classes to selected points within each treatment area and 2) measurement of soil bulk density, gravimetric water content, and soil strength at points previously evaluated for soil disturbance class. Clearcut and deferment cut treatments produced the greatest impacts as evidenced by higher percentage of slightly and highly disturbed areas and increases in bulk density and soil strength. Strip cut KeWtrr$ments had less impact on a stand wide basis but cut strips experienced similar impacts.

Evaluation of site impacts associated with three silvicultural prescriptions in an upland hardwood stand in northern Alabama, USA
Soil disturbance patterns and associated changes in soil physical status were measured in a study that evaluated the implementation of three alternative management prescriptions in an upland hardwood stand in northern Alabama, USA. Management prescriptions applied in this study consisted of a clear-cut, strip cut, and deferment cut that were compared to a non-harvested control. Final tabulation...
متن کاملOak Regeneration following Three Cutting Treatments on Mountain Slopes in Northern Alabama’
Early regeneration success of upland oaks (Quercus spp. L.) was compared for three regeneration cutting treatments in the Sandstone Mountain Region of northern Alabama. Two 4-acre replications each of block dearcutting. strip cutting, and deferment cutting were established on north-facing slopes. The three harvesting treatments were applied in midsummer. Regeneration subplots were reinventoried...

متن کاملLizard Microhabitat and Microclimate Relationships in Southeastern Pine-Hardwood Forests Managed With Prescribed Burning and Thinning
Understanding the impacts of disturbances in forest ecosystems is essential for long-term biodiversity conservation. Many studies have evaluated wildlife responses to various disturbances but most generally do not use changes in microclimate features or microhabitat structure to explain these responses. We examined lizard responses to two common forest management practices (prescribed burning a...
متن کاملIon cycling in hemlock-northern hardwood forests of the southern Lake Superior region: a preliminary study.
Upland forests of the southern Lake Superior region are diverse and contain a shifting mosaic of eastern hemlock [Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr.] and northern hardwood forests dominated by sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.). In this study, we survey the relative effects of management practice (old growth vs. managed), forest cover type (hemlock vs. northern hardwood), and soil great group (Entic ...
